About Us

Our History

...ever heard the phrase, "flying Dutchman"...? Well it's often used to describe the very enterprising Dutch who bring trolley loads of flowers and plants straight from the famous auction in Aalsmeer, Holland.

Our founder, Jelle Zwemstra, began his career doing just this, ably supported by his wife Astrid.

During the late 1980's and early 90's most people bought their flowers from specialist florists and other independent outlets like Garden Centres and even garages but with the rise of the supermarkets in the UK Jelle could sense change was coming.

In 1997 he teamed up with colleagues from the international Dutch Flower Group to form JZ Flowers International Ltd. and set up a packing and distribution business based in Hull, East Yorkshire.

This enabled Jelle, Astrid and their growing team to target the supermarkets that were quick to see the opportunities for fresh flowers and hand tied bouquets.

The business grew and rapidly gained a reputation for design and innovation, quality and low costs.

And today...

We estimate that JZ now produces around 8% of all the flower bouquets sold by UK supermarkets every year. In recent years we’ve also diversified into the supply of indoor plants.

Flowers and plants have become a big part of people’s lives, literally bringing colour and vitality to millions of homes; these days they’re not just associated with life’s big events, flowers and plants make us feel better – every day.

We’re very proud of our achievements so far, with supportive customers and an experienced and positive workforce our business is now quite sizeable!

In fact we’ve grown so quickly that we have outgrown our existing production sites and in 2010 we plan to relocate the majority of our flower packing business into a new dedicated production facility located on the outskirts of Hull.

"As long as we continue to lead with design and quality, combined with an efficient cost base and committed people, I am very confident we can continue on our very successful course"
